Bryant gives Gasol happy homecoming and family bragging rights

Bryant gives Gasol happy homecoming and family bragging rightsLos Angeles  - Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers relied on their experience to make Pau Gasol's return to Memphis a successful one.

Bryant scored 36 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 34.8 seconds left, and the Lakers snapped their first two-game losing streak of the season, rallying past the Memphis Grizzlies 105-96 on Monday night.

"We know what we want to do," said Bryant, who had 10 points to spark a 17-3 game closing run. "The other team is still searching for what their identity is going to be. For us, we've been there and done that. It's just a matter of how we'll execute."

After starring for the Grizzlies for 6 1/2 seasons, Gasol made his first appearance at the FedEx Forum since being dealt as part of a multi-player trade last February. That deal included younger brother Marc going to Memphis.

The Grizzlies franchise leader in points, rebounds and blocks, and their only All-Star, Gasol was greeted to a mixed reception in the pregame introductions, but booed every time he touched the ball.

"It was weird at first to be on that floor as an opponent," said Gasol.

It also marked the first time the two Spanish brothers played a meaningful game against each other.

Pau won the family bragging rights, finishing with 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Meanwhile, Marc, five years younger, struggled for eight points, seven boards and two assists.

"Somebody had to lose tonight," Pau said. "I'm happy we came out victorious because we needed this win extremely bad to continue to pursue our goals. But I'm sorry that on the losing end were the Grizzlies and my brother."

Andrew Bynum scored 13 points. Lamar Odom added 12 for the Lakers (22-5), who suffered last-second losses at Miami and Orlando on their four-game road trip.

Rudy Gay led the Grizzlies (9-18) with 23 points, but none in the fourth period, while O. J. Mayo added 22

The Lakers trailed 93-88 with 3.5 minutes left before rallying behind Bryant.

After Mayo's three-pointer at 59 seconds knotted the game 96, Odom missed a wild reverse layup. Gasol grabbed the loose ball in the lane and spotted Bryant, who buried the straight-away triple to give the Lakers the lead for good.

"It was a big-time loose ball that came out to him and he hit the big three-pointer," Memphis coach Marc Iavaroni said. "I thought that was the turning point in the game."

Gay missed a potential game-tying three-pointer and fouled Derek Fisher, who made one of two free throws. On the ensuing play, Gay lost the ball to Odom, resulting in two free throws by Trevor Ariza, opening up a 102-96 advantage with 23 ticks to go.

After Gasol blocked Gay's layup try, Bryant made one of two free throws before the league's reigning MVP stole the ball from Mayo and drove in for a dunk to complete the comeback. (dpa)
