UN progamme on HIV and AIDS has warned that HIV is the leading cause of death in women globally.
A five- year action plan has been introduced at the ten-day conference in New York to protect the women against Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Nearly 70% of women internationally have been urged to have protected sex.
One of the major causes of HIV infections spreading rapidly around the world is use of injectable drugs. People generally tend to use needles which have already been used by someone earlier.
"Although the number of countries with core HIV prevention services is growing, the level of coverage in injecting drug users is poor in many countries", said Bradley Mathers of the University of New South Wales, Australia, who conducted a study on prevention efforts published in The Lancet medical journal.
Around 16 million users are using injecting drug internationally, out of which 3 million are considered to be HIV-positive.
Many experts have suggested various infection prevention methods such as providing unused needles, condoms and methadone, which is used as pain reliever, and as part of drug addiction detoxification to fight against HIV and AIDS.
