Recently carried out researches have hinted that proper screening of young athletes for heart problems could end up preventing as many as 100 deaths in the US every year. The finding has been backed by several extensive studies and have got the doctors and authorities interested.
Speculations are that most athletes in high school or college end up dying of heart problems which no one knew about till an accident actually occurred, and by then, it is sadly too late.
So make way for ECGs, the easy and cost-effective way to ensure that our young athletes do not suffer from heart problems which go undetected! Heart troubles sometimes show no signs, and people suffering from then might just have one single attack which could prove fatal. In such a scenario, these findings have come as a boon.
"ECG is an extraordinary tool to detect risk in patients", said Dr. Gaetano Thiene, a cardiologist at the University of Padua in Italy, and now it is high time that we make the most of this amazing tool!
ECGs have really good chances of accurately detecting many heart conditions which might never give any overt sings. It is not unusual to come across cases of people, especially those in sports, who just collapsed without any warnings and died. Keeping this in mind, the new discovery seems to be a very useful one.
How the Government takes it forward remains to be seen, but something which can prove this valuable must definitely be pursued, and apt funds should be invested in the same to ensure that there is regular screening of athletes in American schools and colleges.
