The 2010 infrastructure report card released on Wednesday by Engineers Australia points out the poor infrastructure in Victoria, terming it as not even appropriate to meet the present and future demands, and if it has to stand up to the present requirements, millions of Dollars are needed to be invested. The report questions Government's investment policies and at the same time it calls for a new sketching as far as the infrastructure planning goes. The report also highlighted that Melbourne's rail network needs a complete makeover, as since the first report came out in 2005, no basic improvement has been noticed.
This report card rated the railways a "D" that means it is in the poorest condition among the public assets, with electricity getting a "C" and the water crowned with a "C" as well. On the whole, the state was given an average "C" in the card. Electricity assets were found that as not being capable of coping up with extreme weather conditions, and hence a long term plan is immediately recommended.
Spokesman Professor John Wilson said, "Overall, we give the rating of all our infrastructure in Victoria probably around about a C, saying it's barely adequate. We know that good infrastructure underpins a developed society, our economy relies on it, our livability relies on it, and sustainability relies on it ... so we really encourage added investment because you either enjoy the benefits of good infrastructure or you suffer the consequences".
