The ever sensitive issue of marijuana legalization has once again come to light, with advocates of medical marijuana, along with the Venice Beach Care Center and Pure Life Alternative Wellness Center, filing a lawsuit against Los Angeles, stressing that the city's new ordinance, which is yet to take effect, is "too restrictive and violates state law".

Under the lawsuit filed, Americans for Safe Access, which is the country's main medical marijuana advocacy not-for-profit group, has started a fierce legal battle with the pot dispensaries of Los Angeles, stressing that the new rules are so strict and restrictive that even the law-abiding businesses might be forced to shut down.

The new order, which was signed into law on February 3, aims to ensure that there is no misuse of the fact that marijuana is legal for medical purposes. The suing party is now looking for a restraining order to stop the law from being enforced, pointing out that under the new orders, many people would be forced to stop growing the plant, which will directly affect its availability, and patients will then unnecessarily suffer.

"We want to work with the city to comply with its regulations, but such unreasonable requirements make compliance impossible", said Yamileth Bolanos, the Head of a group of collectives and operator of the PureLife Alternative Wellness Center.

The debate of whether it is alright to legalize marijuana everywhere for medical purposes has now been sparked again, but now the debate is more about what to legalize and how. Something like marijuana and legal cultivation of it is bound to be misused if the rules are too lenient, but too many restrictions would again be a problem. The authorities need to find a golden mean.
