Shortage of Beds Requires Babies and Pregnant Women to Undertake Long Journeys

A charity has revealed that many of the new babies and pregnant women are being shifted to centers which are far away for care purposes unnecessarily.

It has been shared that over 1,500 babies are moved to a hospital in Scotland every year, a place which is much further away from home for many, according to Bliss, an organization which carries out campaigns on behalf of premature and sick babies and their concerned families.

The charity has also estimated that about 1,000 women every year are transferred to a different hospital as soon as they give birth.

Bliss's report has said that much of the shifting happens because the services are overstretched and the places at which the babies and mothers already are face shortages, and not because they require specialist attention.

"The recent focus which special care baby services have received in Scotland is very welcome but there is still a long way to go. It is deeply concerning that unnecessary long distance transfers are still occurring, putting enormous financial, practical and emotional strain on families. The care of our most vulnerable babies and the support for their families is crucial to get right at what is already a very difficult time", said Andy Cole, Chief Executive of Bliss.

The charity is now calling upon the Scottish government to intervene.
