V8 Race Championship Leads to Evacuation of Cancer Patients’ Beds
Cancer Patients’ Beds

In Adelaide, cancer patients waiting for treatment are being pressurized to leave their beds for V8 race car fans.

Owned and controlled by the Cancer Council SA, motels for cancer patients are close to the Adelaide Central Business District. It also offers cancer patients transportation to-and- from the hospital for treatment.

A 65-year-old man with terminal cancer has been denied room by hospital and Cancer Council staff saying that no rooms would be given to patients during Adelaide's round of the National V8 Championships, the Clipsal 500 that will run from March 11-14.

The man's wife said that her husband will have to postpone his treatment and will remain in pain for at least one week.

Prior appointments for radiation treatment were also canceled because of the approaching championship.

However, Cancer Council SA, Chief Executive, Brenda Wilson said, "Eighty-one per cent of the guests at Flinders Lodge at present are cancer-related or other medical patients”.

The hotel staff also said that patients currently staying in Flinders Lodge would be shifted to the nearby Greenhill Lodge to keep more rooms vacant for race fans.
