Western Digital Launches its First Consumer SSD

Western Digital released its first solid state drive for the consumers on Wednesday. The new WD SiliconEdge Blue SSD is of 2.5 inch and would be accessible in capacities up to 256GB. It also claimed that it has a very fast speed of read and write. It features the serial ATA which can read up to 250MBps and can write up to 170MBps.

The new SSD will be strong enough to tolerate drops, shock, and vibration. Less power is consumed by it than regular hard drives. It also supports error correction control, TRIM and Native Command Queuing to enhance the performance.

"The development of the WD SiliconEdge Blue product family leverages WD's extensive experience in designing and manufacturing highly reliable storage products and the company's worldwide sales and distribution network to accelerate SSD technology adoption by OEMs, technology enthusiasts, gamers and road warriors", said Michael Hajeck, Senior Vice President and General Manager of WD's solid state storage business unit.

The cost ranges from $279 to $999 for the capacities ranging between 64GB to 256GB.
