Automotive icon Bob Lutz plans to retire on May 1, this year as Vice Chairman from General Motors. GM Chairman Ed Whitacre assumed the role of CEO in the month of December. Lutz's place became unclear, when the new CEO reordered the company.
He was different from Whitacre in various aspects. He was nicknamed "Maximum Bob" for his impressive personality in the auto industry. He used to lay out his ideas to senior leaders and expected them to stay in their subject boundaries.
When Fritz Henderson resigned as CEO in December, Lutz said that if he felt unwanted, he would leave the organization. He also added that General Motors had a product- focused mindset.
As Lutz stated, "Our product lineup is as strong as it has been in GM's history. The perception of our products and brands is beginning to catch up with reality. And most importantly, the absolute commitment to being a product-driven company is ingrained throughout the organization -- from the top down -- and I am confident that, under Ed Whitacre's leadership, the straightforward, singular focus on product will endure".
Whitacre said, "The influence Bob Lutz has had on GM's commitment to design, build and sell the world's best vehicles will last for years to come. I, along with many other men and women in GM and throughout the industry, have greatly benefited from his passion, wisdom and guidance".
Though, it is Lutz's second attempt to retire from General Motors. Earlier he announced to leave GM at the end of 2009. Prior to that, Lutz had also worked as a Senior Executive at Chrysler Corp, Ford Motor Co. and BMW.
