Bank Vote Pressure on Indonesian President Yudhoyono

After the Parliament voted for a criminal probe into two top officials of his party, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will be addressing the nation. He will deliver a speech at about 8:00 pm (1300 GMT) at the state palace, on the coming Thursday to save his delicate coalition.

Two years back Vice-President Boediono and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati spent $720m (£487m) of state money to bail out Bank Century, which is a misuse of power and authority, according to the opposition and the two main parties in the governing coalition.

Both the coalition allies of Mr. Yudhoyono and opposition parties have joined their hands against him. Though, he gave only delayed support to the two ministers.

About 325 MPs voted in favor of the criminal investigation of both Ms. Indrawati and Mr. Boediono, who are liked by the business and reform communities in Indonesia.

When the politicians were not able to reach a consensus in preliminary vote, violence prevailed in and outside the Parliament on Tuesday.

As a matter of fact the Parliamentary vote does not require a legal action by the President.

The ultimate cost of bailout has increased ten times from its original estimation

Sri Mulyani said that bailout was important to avoid a banking crisis. She said, "The truth is my main priority... In this case, I've to carry out the state mandate to protect the people, manage problems and handle various crises which could occur".
