10 new hazardous waste sites supposedly dangerous to the human health and the environment have been added in the National Priorities List of Superfund sites by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The EPA seeks to recover costs from the responsible parties through the federal program by cleaning abandoned hazardous waste sites in the country, in order to protect the health of nearby communities and to save the ecosystems from harmful contaminants.
The 10 sites that have been added to the National Priorities List are mentioned below.
Salt Chuck Mine in Alaska, JJ Seifert Machine in Florida, Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp. in Florida which has impacted St. Johns River's water quality, Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp. in North Carolina, Chemetco in Illinois, Lake Calumet Cluster in Illinois, Gratiot County Golf Course in Michigan, Gowanus Canal in New York, Black Butte Mine in Oregon where Mercury and other contaminants affected the creeks that flew into Cottage Grove Reservoir. The last has been identified as Van Der Horst USA Corporation in Terrell, Texas, located in a commercial warehouse district and currently an inactive chromium and iron plating facility.
"Cleaning up contaminated sites in Texas is one of the most visible kinds of projects that demonstrate to the public and our government partners the value that the agency can have", said Al Armendariz, EPA Administrator for Region 6.
