Chief Executive of Ofcom, Ed Richards, shared that various media firms have raised concerns about the net neutrality issue, which is basically the principle that all net traffic must be treated as same by Internet service providers, during the last few months.
"It has been a big issue for historic reasons for many years in the US. It is now beginning to be an issue here. The deployment of traffic management techniques and policies is now happening in scale", he said.
Various major companies, including Google, very strongly believe that the net neutrality principle should be upheld, in order to ensure that all web traffic is treated just about the same, while also debating that if the principle is ignored, there could be a possible thwarting of growth of innovative and new websites.
Services which are branded as "bandwidth-hungry", like the BBC iPlayer, on the other hand, have managed to become a reason of alarm for providers of net services, which say that their networks are being jammed and overburdened with video traffic.
"Traffic management policies need to be very clearly explained and very transparent", Mr. Richards said, while sharing that Ofcom would publish its initial findings on the issue in the Spring.
