Maybe pushed by Apple's claims that it is one of biggest companies for mobile handsets in the world, Sony is looking to launch a number of new devices and services which would give Apple's iTunes Store, iPhone and iPad head-on competition. The complete strategy will revolve around what is presently being tagged as the Sony Online Service, along with smartphones and tablet PC devices.
Reports are that Sony will be launching its online media platform sometime before the month ends, and it will be aimed mainly at competing with Apple's iTunes Store. Like the Apple store, Sony' store would offer applications, downloadable music and movies, in addition to the company back-catalog of PS games.
Also, Sony is looking to release a large number of devices to connect to the online service, and the firm is planning a smartphone which would be capable of playing games originally meant for the PSP Go.
"It's still not quite clear what specific steps Sony will take to achieve that, especially when iPad and other highly capable mobile devices are crowding the market", said Nobuo Kurahashi, a consumer-electronics analyst at Japanese brokerage Mizuho Investors Securities.
