The US Food and Drug Administration made an announcement today that the brand name of Kapidex, the heartburn drug, has been changed to Dexilant to avoid confusion created by the similar name of the other drugs. Since the drug was approved, the errors were being committed due to the confusion with the medicines such as Casodex, AstraZeneca, Kadian, Actavis Kadian.
"Sometimes unexpected name confusions can occur once the product goes to market", stated the FDA in a press release.
All the drugs have far and wide different uses; Casodex is used to cure prostate cancer and Kadian to treat pain. Kapidex is a proton pump inhibitor, which is used to treat heartburn and other infections that are caused by excess stomach acid.
"There will be no changes made to Kapidex other than its name. Health care professionals and other individuals responsible for ordering, stocking, and billing for the product should be aware that Dexilant will have a new National Drug Code (NDC) number associated with the product", claimed the FDA.
The newly named drug will be available on store shelves in late April.
