Celebrating food from field to table is the theme of the year's Nutrition Month campaign, across Vancouver Island, being organized by the Brant County Health Unit, in the Nutrition Month of March with an aim to celebrate the locally grown bounty.
People in abundance want to eat food grown closer to home, as it supports local growers and keeps food Dollars within the local economy, reducing the transportation costs.
"The Grow and Gobble Challenge is an excellent way to learn about what, when, where and how foods are grown in Canada", said Laura Brown, Public Health Dietitian with the Health Unit.
Participants can win prizes including a vegetable garden starter kit by answering quizzes which reveal facts about local Canadian food and healthy eating.
Certain tips to enjoy a local crop include planting a garden in your backyard and getting children involved in preparing food.
Nutrition Month resource packages to support healthy eating events and activities are available for within Brantford and Brant County at the health unit.
Apples have been reported as the favorite local food, followed by the other regionally produced foods namely, maple syrup, lobster, beef, corn on the cob, and cheese by a Canadian survey conducted by Ipsos Reid and Dietitians of Canada.
