Repercussions of Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants

A number of orthopedics are advising patients not to undergo hip implants, known as metal-on-metal hip replacements.

According to Dr. Nizar Mahomed, an Orthopedic Surgeon at Toronto Western Hospital and the Medical Director of the Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis Program, increasing number of patients are coming up with complaints like inflammation, pain and loss of mobility, all of who have undergone hip implants.

Mahomed revealed that after every two to five years of the first surgery, patients are supposed to undergo hip replacements.

According to reports in the U. S., small particles of cobalt and chromium sometimes break off in the body leading to inflammation, pain, and loss of tissue in the hip joint. In severe cases, it is likely to result in kidney failure or a higher risk of cancer in the long run.

Analyzing these reports, many U. S. surgeons are cutting down on metal-on-metal surgery for their patients.

Meanwhile another research at the University of British Columbia found that increased levels of metal ions were found in the blood of patients who opted for metal-on-metal implants.

Mahomed believes that the metal-on-plastic implant is a better option compared with metal-on-metal implants since it is devoid of complications.

To avoid any consequences of metal-on-metal implants, it is advised that the patients go for regular check-ups to their orthopedic surgeon.
