Federal Budget to Abolish Tax Breaks for Cosmetic Procedures

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty plans to abolish tax breaks for cosmetic surgeries like liposuction, hair replacement and teeth whitening, boob and nose procedures, Botox and many more.

The change will come into effect on Thursday and is likely to save Ottawa $40 million per annum.

Only reconstructive surgery will be given a tax break only with the condition that person is suffering either from a congenital problem or has met with an accident.

Though, the patients have been given discretion to decrease the federal tax payable by claiming 15% of the expenditure incurred on either a total medical bill of more than $2,024 or 3% of their total income. The patient can opt for any one of them based on whichever of the two is less.

The news of the tax change was like a bolt from the blue for Dr. Louis Grondin of Cosmetic Laser & Vein Centre in Calgary. He said, "Why this budget would penalize them is a little bit beyond me".

Dr. Volinder Dhesi, who performs cosmetic and general dentistry at his Ranchlands Dental practice in Calgary, also added that the Canadians should have been cautioned about this change in the tax breaks.

The change in the Budget will bring Canada in sequence with the policies in UK and US.
