Freezing Technique Might Help Cure Breast Cancer, Says Study

Breast cancer can be cured by "freezing technique", according to a new study. Two freezing techniques were tested on mice by the researchers.

Freezing breast tumors helped stop the spread of the cancer in mice, a new study has found. One of the methods was based on rapid freezing of about 30 seconds and another one took a few minute. Though both the freezing methods killed breast tumors, the former was found to be better. With rapid freezing technique, many changes happened in the immune system, which killed the tumor.

"Cryoablation has strong potential as a treatment for breast cancer. Not only does it appear effective in treating the primary tumor with little cosmetic concerns, but it also may stimulate an immune response capable of eradicating any cells that have traveled throughout the body, reducing both local and distant recurrence, similar to giving a breast cancer vaccine", said Dr. Michael Sabel, an associate professor of surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School.

The doctors will talk to cancer patients about the new findings at a cancer forum on Saturday, which is sponsored by the Oncology Foundation of Maryland and the District of Columbia.
