A free youth health centre, which is in Christchurch, is about to close its doors next month. This centre has been offering free medical, sexual and mental health services to the patients under 25, but due to financial problems the centre is now unable to survive. It’s a big shock for the patients.
About 7000 young people go to the Christchurch Youth Health Centre every year for treatment. But the funds are not enough to cure each and every patient every day. As the Government has changed the funding system last year, the amount of money needed for survival has been deducted, said the founding doctor Sue Bagshaw.
"It's going to be very hard 'cause the reason why they're (youth) here is they didn't find anywhere else to go”, she said.
The clients of the centre would be moved to a similar healthcare service for free sexual healthcare, said CDHB chairman Alister James.
Regardless of the low funding, Bagshaw claimed that as soon as possible, she would reopen a similar service.
