Grieving Mother Questions the Cause of Death of her 23 days Old Baby

The grieving mother of Nathalie, a 23 days old baby girl, who died at The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, demanded to know why her daughter could not be saved after having been operated upon.

Nathalie, weighing 7lb 5oz at her birth on November 29, was diagnosed with a common heart condition. Surgeon Salih, 39, had told Nathalie's family that the surgery carried a 5% risk but reassured them that the results would be positive. A cardiac shunt was inserted to improve blood flow between her heart and lungs. But the four-hour operation did not prove successful and the baby had to be rushed back to theatre for further heart surgery, during which Nathalie's condition became critical and she died.

Aida Lo, 29, said, "When she came out of her second operation, I felt she was already gone. When I touched her she was very cold and she looked unwell. A part of me could tell she wasn't going to survive".

A spokesman from the John Radcliffe Hospital said, "We can confirm that all four of the children who died within the timeframe concerned were patients of Mr. Salih, but we are not just looking at the surgical procedures, we are looking at all aspects of patient care in relation to these children".
