Birthrate and Age of Pregnant Women Go up in Canada
Birthrate and Age of Pregnant Women

According to the current data shared by Statistics Canada, birthrate as well as the age of mothers is on the rise in Canada. More than half of the babies are born to mothers over 30. In 2007, about 367,864 babies were delivered by Canadian women who are up 13,247 or 3.7%, from 2006.

The report revealed that since 1995, the number of babies born in 2007 was the highest. The birthrate rose in all age groups, specially, among mothers aged 30 to 34.

"This upward trend is not unique to Canada. In recent years, other countries with low fertility rates - such as Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and Australia - also experienced an increase in their total fertility rate”, said the Federal Agency in a news release.

83% of the total increase in birthrates has been reported by Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia.

"For Dunedin city, the pro-ration gave a total of 6460 births for the period 2007-2011, which equates to a total fertility rate of 1.35”, said Richard Speirs, Statistics New Zealand statistical analyst.
