A new study revealed that stress can make people to grind their teeth at night.
"Bruxing can lead to abrasive tooth wear, looseness and sensitivity of teeth, and growth and pain in the muscles responsible for chewing. Its causes are still relatively unknown, but stress has been implicated. We aimed to investigate whether different stress-factors, and different coping strategies, were more or less associated with these bruxism symptoms”, said Maria Giraki, from Heinrich-Heine-University, Düsseldorf, Germany.
Maria Giraki and her researchers conducted a study of 69 people, in which 48 were suffering from bruxism, one of the most common sleep disorders.
Gnashing of teeth was measured by thin plates placed in person’s mouth all night. Feedback forms were used to know the stress level of the participants.
The results revealed that Bruxing was not linked with age or sex, but it is most common in people who are likely to deal with every day stress and difficulty at work.
