Consumption of 100 per cent fruit juice leads to healthier diet in teenagers in comparison to non-consumers, according to a study released in the Journal of Health Promotion.
The study was conducted on 4000 teenagers aged 12 to 18 years, and showed that teens consuming 100 percent fruit juice are less likely to take dietary fat and saturated fat, and are likely to consume nutrients such as Vitamins C and B6, potassium and iron, and as a result these teenagers tend to have healthier diets. The study also found that there is no link between 100% fruit juice and weight.
Teenagers, who drink more than six ounces of 100% fruit juice per day, consumed more fruits and less fats & sugars.
It is difficult to encourage consumption of healthy food and nutrient beverages among teenagers, which is a period when the body needs nutrient supply.
"One hundred per cent juice is a smart choice. It provides important nutrients that growing teens need and the research consistently shows that drinking fruit juice is not linked to being overweight”, said Dr Theresa Nicklas of the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine.
