Dante's Inferno is based on a loose interpretation of the first part of the literary work Divine Comedy, the epic poem by Dante Alighieri.
Just like "God of War", the game uses the classic work's descriptions of hell and its inhabitants as the basis for a solid action game.
The poem by Alighieri describes the three realms of the dead: Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise.
In the game, you play Dante - a thirteenth century warrior who must go deep into the depths of Hell to save his fiancée Beatrice from the clutches of Satan, making your way through the nine circles of Hell and battling some of the fiercest, gruesome, and most hell-bent creatures around.
The imagery and enemies are visually disturbing, to say the least. The game has a lot of violence, nudity and suggestive themes, so don't take the M rating lightly.
In the adventure, players can choose to have Dante fight on either the side of evil (but in the process, damning his soul) or good (redeeming himself from his sins, and absolving the souls of those trapped in Hell).
The PS3 version of the game, subtitled the "Divine Edition", is loaded with extras, a bonus documentary on the game, an art collection and the text of Dante's poem.
