Mrs. Daley Underwent Leg Surgery, Reveals Doctor

After having a bone tumor already treated with radiation, Mayor Daley's wife, Maggie, underwent a surgery on her leg which involved a foot-long titanium rod insertion, so that she may be relieved of the pain as well as decrease her risk of suffering a fracture.

The doctors have to recommend a surgery that strengthens the bone by placing a steel rod in it, when the bone is on the verge of breaking.

Rush orthopedic surgeon Dr. Steven Gitelis explained, "We frequently will use a rod to reinforce the bone. The rod goes down the center of the bone; it's a very strong metal rod. The bone is a hollow tube. So, we thread it down there to make the bone strong again. We put these locking screws through the rod. And that further strengthens the bone".

It is far easy to repair a damaged bone as compared to the bone that is already broken.

Dr. Steve Rosen shared that Mrs. Daley's pre-surgery blood work was good and they don't have any proof of the tumor spreading to other parts of her body.

Rosen said, "She had a tumor there. That softens the bone. To provide additional stability to the bone, minimize any risk of fracture and decrease discomfort, they put, essentially, a titanium rod into the bone. It's a foot long, maybe shorter".

Mrs. Daley will be hospitalized for a few more days. But the doctors are sure that she will be relieved of the pain will cease using mobile walkers and crutches, which she has been using for moving around.
