AIDS Outbreak Tends to Decrease, UNGASS Report Reveals

The growth results for Guyana for the previous two years, which will be offered to UNGASS during the later part of the ongoing month, includes the fact that the AIDS outbreak in the region has been gradually declining amid the population.

While this is a joyful development, the report also shows that in 2003 and 2008, women were more affected with AIDS.

Guyana's 2010 report has showed that improvement has been made over the last six years, and the occurrence of HIV among the general populations has started to decrease.

Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy revealed that the 2010 UNGASS details indicate that Guyana has made significant improvement in fighting against HIV, and the health sector is expected to do well in the future too.

According to the reports, the number of AIDS associated deaths had dipped from 475 in 2002, to 360 in 2005, 298 in 2006 and 239 in 2008.

UNGASS report found that the draft HIV legislation deals with a number of problems including the safety of HIV patients living under discrimination.
