"Alice in Wonderland" broke all the records for a March release in North America, this weekend at the box office, earning an enormous amount of about 112 million dollars.
The 3D version of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson's classic take has been directed by Tim Burton, and stars Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska of Australia, and it had been released almost all over the world, including the United States and Canada, on Friday, and earned the title of "highest grossing film" for the January-March period of the year.
According to the estimates based on preliminary data, "Shutter Island" is on the second position with earnings of 13 million dollars on its opening day.
The earlier opening-day record had been $28 million for the month of March and was set by "300" in 2007. "Cop Out", which is a comedy film of Bruce Willis, knocked down from second position to fourth in the second week.
"The Crazies", which is based on the military's repression of a virus made by man, that results in a permanent mental illness and demise, was able to bag the fifth rank.
The science-fiction epic "Avatar", which is the highest ever grossing movie across the world, is at the sixth position.
