An inquiry into the death of Network Ten newsreader Charmaine Dragun revealed that she had switched to a medication that influenced suicidal contemplation.
She had been fighting depression for a long time and had also become anorexic some years back. She had a promising television career in front of her and was soon to tie the nuptial knot. But in November 2007, she went to the cliff top in Watsons Bay in Sydney's eastern suburbs, and took her own life.
Counsel assisting the Coroner, David Hirsch, told Glebe Coroner's Court that the investigation would inspect if a change in Ms. Dragun's antidepressant medication had prompted her suicide.
Mr. Hirsch said, "Objectively, Charmaine had an ideal life, she had everything to live for, but behind the perfect exterior, there was a deep and troubling issue".
Mr. Hirsch said that Dragun's changed medicines cannot be the sole reason of her suicide since July earlier that year; she had been "talking about and writing about suicide".
Charmaine's mother, Ms. Estelle Dragun, said, "Hopefully there is an inquiry and we will learn - all of us, from the lay person to the medical professional - about depression and suicide".
