Reports have released that a Trojan managed to find its way into the latest downloads of the Energizer Duo USB battery charger software.
The virus, which seems to have been bundled in a charger-monitor software download package, tends to open up a back-door on all the Windows PCs that have been compromised. The malware-ridden file is automatically downloaded from the website of the manufacturer during the installation process.
The Trojan has only attacked software which is downloaded, and CD versions seem to be safe.
As has been warned by Symantec, a file displayed as "Arucer. dll" is actually the Trojan-Arugizer that has been installed on the compromised machine, and is capable of creating all kinds of troubles, which includes sending of files to the remote hacker or downloading other forms of the malware.
"We were interested in finding out how long this file had been available to the public. The compile time for the file is May 10, 2007. It is impossible to say for sure that this Trojan has always been in this software, but from our initial inspection it appears so. We also suspected that the entire file may have been inserted into the package without the creator's knowledge, but upon closer inspection we discovered the DLL checks for the USB device", Symantec said.
