LBANS to Enjoy Government Funding for Internet Services

The President of the Library Boards Association of Nova Scotia, Mary MacLellan, proclaimed that he has bagged success in the libraries' provincial funding for Internet service.

After examining the issue completely, the Department of Education agreed upon providing the internet services to the public libraries. "The Government pays the library's Internet bills and has for the past 14 years", said Eric Stackhouse, Chief Librarian at the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library. "We had an agreement that we would supply the equipment and staff, and the province would pay for the Internet access", added Eric.

The average cost of enabling the Community Access Program for the libraries will come at a cost of $300,000.

LBANS had brought out a solidarity measure, last year, wherein it asked the Nova Scotians to make the Education Department realize the board's concerns over the reduction in internet funding by the Government.

"Now we can look forward to hearing how the government will implement the recommendations of the Library Funding Task Force that was tabled in October", said MacLellan.
