On Monday, gaming company Valve declared that will get its Steam digital distribution platform to Macs.
Valve is the largest online vendor of games. Last month, Valve boasted of more than 25 million active Steam user accounts and, around 2 million gamers using the service at any time. In addition, there are more than 1,000 games offered on Steam, though all of them will not be available on the Mac platform right away.
Valve said that the Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and a new feature called Steam Play, that allows customers who buy the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform without any charges. This way a gamer can play the PC version of a game via Steam Play, and continue on the Mac version without having to pay extra money.
Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series, will be the first games ported to the Mac platform since they belong to Valve.
John Cook, Director of Steam development at Valve, said, “In future, Valve will release games simultaneously for Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360. Mac and Windows players will be part of the same multiplayer universe, sharing servers, lobbies, and so forth”.
Portal 2 is said to be the Valve's first simultaneous release for Mac and Windows.
