The Trojan housed inside the Energizer Duo USB battery charger software, it seems, has infected window machines for three years, as has been speculated by Symantec. The virus seems to have been making rounds since May 2007.
The Energizer battery company revealed that the Windows versions of the firm’s Duo and USB battery charger products have been affected by the Trojan. The NiMH batteries were introduced in 2007 and have been sold in Europe, Asia and US.
Energizer did not reveal how the Trojan entered into the software.
An advisory by US-CERT said, "The installer for the Energizer Duo software places the file UsbCharger. dll in the application's directory and Arucer. dll in the Windows system32 directory. When the Energizer UsbCharger software executes, it utilizes the UsbCharger. dll component ... UsbCharger. dll executes Arucer. dll ... and it also configures Arucer. dll to execute automatically when Windows starts”.
The company, on March 5 announced that it has decided that the sale of the software will be stopped and the website from which the Trojan software can be downloaded will be deleted. The company has issued warning to users to uninstall the software from their computers.
Consumers are urged to remove the Arucer. dll malware file and delete the Run DLL Application firewall exclusion.
