A research led by Lu Wang from the Brigham and Women's Hospital, has contradicted with the saying that a single glass of wine contains more than 100 empty calories. The study found that women who consume a glass of red wine daily have less risk of gaining weight over a period of 13 years than who don't drink
The report published in the American Medical Association's Archives of Internal Medicine assessed 19,220 healthy American women above the age limit of 39 for a period of 13 years. Approximately, all the respondents gained weight, but 41.3% tuned out to be overweight and 3.8% became obese. Women who didn't consume alcohol gained more weight than the women who drank beer or red wine. The report revealed astonishing facts which disprove that alcohol causes obesity.
Red wine has been recognized by the researchers as a means to keep diabetes, Alzheimer's, prostate cancer and leukemia at bay.
Catherine Collins, dietician and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, said, "It would be a mistake to think that drinking alcohol helps you lose weight".
She refuted the findings of the study. She said, "We know that alcohol calories do count. For binge drinkers, for example, alcohol can have a major impact on weight". She commented that the respondents of the study were normal weight. "These are quite an unusual group, who were likely to be mindful of keeping their body healthy", she said.
