As many as 6 New Jersey women, who were looking to enhance their backsides with silicone, were instead injected with the material that is used by contractors to caulk bathtubs.
All the women from the Newark area were hospitalized in a local facility, after providers, who were unlicensed, injected them with what experts believe is a diluted version of silicone of non-medical grade.
"The same stuff you use to put caulk around the bathtub", said Steven M. Marcus, Executive and Medical Director of the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System.
No investigations, however, have been started to assess if the six cases, reports of which began in mid-February, are related. Health officials have nonetheless issued an alert across state hospitals and doctors about the cases and potential for more victims.
The six women were reportedly all from the Dominican Republic and the injections had been administered in hotels across the Newark area.
"What we've been hearing from the hospitals is that these women are presented with deep tissue infections and skin infections. Abscesses form in some cases", said New Jersey Health Department Epidemiologist Dr. Tina Tan.
