Although the South American country opines that the U. S. can resolve the trade dispute by negotiating, Brazil is thinking to retaliate against the same over U. S. cotton subsidies.
U. S. must do the needful in a period of 30 days; otherwise Brazilian wheat tariffs will rise to 30%. The WTO has given Brazil a formal green signal so that it can impose sanctions on U. S. imports.
As per the spokesperson for the Office of the U. S. Trade Representative, USTR has tried hard to give a solution to all the queries of this dispute, but without Brazil opting for the countermeasures. U. S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke leaves for Brazil on Tuesday to discuss the same.
Brazilian and American interests may be harmed by the Brazil's proposed tariff, according to the National Cotton Council. U. S. cotton's share of the retaliation is fixed at $147 million. As compared to the previous five-year average, costs of U. S. cotton price-related programs are down more than 80%.
Lincoln and Chambliss said, "It is unfortunate Brazil is moving forward with retaliation without first engaging in meaningful discussions towards resolving the dispute. The U. S. government continues to express its willingness to have a substantive dialogue but we cannot negotiate with a partner that is unwilling to voice what it wants".
