Yesterday, The Australian reported the case of the 11-year-old, Angela, who is suffering from an incurable neurological disorder, Rett syndrome. Though she is about to turn 12, she communicates and acts as a three-month-old baby.
To save her from pain and fatigue, her parents have won approval from the Family Court to have a hysterectomy, the removal of her womb, performed on her.
David Ravine, Australia's leading expert on Rett syndrome, who is Chair in medical genetics at the University of Western Australia, applauded Judge Paul Cronin’s decision as "superb" and "thoughtful".
Nearly 350 Australian girls are affected by Rett syndrome.
Professor Ravine said that girls with Rett syndrome do not understand much because they have no language, but "their parents tend to love them to bits".
"They love music, they love water. They have quite interesting personalities, when you get to know them", he said.
Ravine said that he has never met the family in person but feels that they are doing the right thing for her.
Meanwhile, lot of parents of disabled children is on Angela's parents’ side. One mother said, "I am totally with Angela's parents on this one, I have a severely disabled daughter and I am still to this day fighting for her to have a hysterectomy. She has outburst behaviors and becomes very violent during her menstruation times".
