The Health Department’s online condom wrapper contest, involved more than 15,000 New Yorkers voting for a computer power button to turn on the mood.
Millions of the New York City condoms will now have wrappers with a design of a circle with a line thrust out on the top of it. It will be a new sex symbol for the people.
Designer Luis Acosta said that the image is meant to let people know they’re in control of safer sex. He said, “I wanted to send a positive message and be subtle with the design. I was afraid I’d get disqualified at first”.
He got 23% votes for her creative design and surpassed the other four finalists. His design will debut in about 6 million condoms the city distributes to 2,400 sites like bars, nail salons, barbershops and community centers.
New York City's Health Commissioner, Dr. Thomas Farley, while revealing the design in a ceremony said, “When I saw [the design], I said this is pure genius. Everyone recognizes that symbol on their PC. People should use their own power to control their sexual health”.
