Reclassification Meant for Patient’s Safety, No Profits Involved, says Pharmacy

The reclassifications of medicines, including restrictions selling 70 products to pharmacy, the Pharmacy Guild deny the charges of making profits and clarify that the step is being taken for ensuring the safety of patients.

This decision was proposed by Medsafe, the Government's medicine regulator as they have restricted the sale of products including Vicks Formula 44 and Lemsip drinks. Cough and Cold medicines are not being recommended for children below six as the harms that it results in, are more than the benefits.

Chief Executive of Food and Grocery Council Katherine Rich criticizes the decision by stating, “New Zealanders pay up to 45% more for the same products in pharmacies. Medsafe has come up with no evidence that there is a problem that needs to be fixed”.

Chief Executive of the Guild Annabel Young said, "As access to these medicines is currently unlimited, these medicines are often perceived as safe for everybody, which is not the case."

Ms Young adds, "Community pharmacists are medicines experts. They are trained to assess the patient's condition and recommend safe and effective treatments. Community pharmacists ensure patients receive the right medicines for the right reason".
