Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan has taken the decision to increase the withdrawal limit for Medisave funds to facilitate health screening. Health screening tests are done to determine the possible presence of a disease or other health problem. Health screenings often are conducted routinely as a preventive measure, or may be done when there is reason to suspect a particular health problem exists.
During a discussion in the Health Ministry Budget, the Health Minister commented that the new move will be successful in barring the ‘unethical screening tests’. The withdrawal limit for the community hospitals would be raised from the amount of S$150 to S$250 and annually the withdrawal would range from S$3,500 to S$5,000 and for the rehabilitation services, it will be raised from S$20 to S$25.
The Health Minister said, "Being able to access good rehabilitative care near their homes after their discharge will make a significant difference to patients' recovery and subsequent quality of life".
He further stated that he has had most unlikeable experiences by being a gatekeeper to Medisave to prevent the unnecessary flow of funds out of Medisave. He said, "I am trying to prevent such an outcome. That is why we have stringent Medisave withdrawal rules and limits. This will help to balance current consumption against future needs, and ensure that Singaporeans have enough Medisave to look after their medical needs during retirement."
