Google Maps to Offer Cycle Routes After Petition

As has been confirmed by recent reports, search engine giant Google is now adding cycle routes to its Google Maps service, which would allow users to plot the best routes across 150 cities in the UK.

The new feature is inclusive of step-by-step directions, and bike trails have been outlined directly on the map. In addition, a new Bicycling later has been added which effectively shows bike trails, bike lanes and roads which are bike friendly.

Also offered is a directions feature which offers users step-by-step, bike-specific routing suggestions.

"This new tool will open people's eyes to the possibility and practicality of hopping on a bike and riding. We know people want to ride more, and we know it's good for people and communities when they do ride more - this makes it possible. It is a game-changer, especially for those short trips that are the most polluting", said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists.

The development has come after Google received a petition of over 50,000 signatures from an organization which recognized itself as the Google Maps Bike There.
