According to recent reports, the OnLive remote gaming service, which has been in the research and development mode for the last eight years, will launch on June 17 this year.
The cloud gaming service, which can be availed at a $14.95 monthly charge, will offer up to 720p-caliber high-definition gameplay; thereby allowing users to play ultra-high-end games, such as Mass Effect 2, Borderlands, Assassin's Creed 2, and Crysis.
As a part of OnLive’s apparent promotional strategy, the company recently announced in its blog post that the first 25,000 users who place pre-orders for the new gaming service - via the OnLive preorder site – will be able to access the service free of cost for the first three months. Furthermore, some other discounts for the early users include loyalty programs and special deals at the E3 show to be held in June.
OnLive is being touted as a games-on-demand service, as it completely takes care of the rigorous game processing on the server side. The service entirely abstracts both the game as well as the processing power needed for running it, and places them inside a remote server.
Noting that the forthcoming roll out of OnLive is a “milestone” for the company, CEO and co-founder Steve Perlman said: “It's the realization of a dream that we knew would be a huge undertaking, but also one that would change everything.”
