Clues to Diseases and their Causes Offered by Complete Genome

Reports have confirmed that two research teams have managed to independently decode the complete genome of patients to discover the exact genetic cause of their diseases and conditions. With the approach, experts might be able to offer a new start to the so far disappointing effort to discover the genetic roots of chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's, which prove to be fatal.

Ever since the first ever full genetic code of a human being was sequenced for about $500 Million, fewer than a dozen genomes had been decoded, and all of these were of relatively healthy people.

As has been shared by geneticists, the new research has revealed that it was now completely possible to sequence the full genome of a patient as well, that too at reasonable cost and with substantial accuracy so that it is of practical use to medical researchers.

A single's subject genome cost a total of $50,000 to decode.

"We are finally about to turn the corner, and I suspect that in the next few years human genetics will finally begin to systematically deliver clinically meaningful findings", said David Goldstein, a Duke University Geneticist.
