The recall of all food products potentially contaminated with a flavoring ingredient which was found to be salmonella-tainted has now managed to jump even further over the past week, particularly with the addition of 1.7 million pounds of ready-to-eat beef taquito and chicken quesadilla products from a firm in Houston.
Also, Ruiz Foods of Denison, Texas, recalled as much as 115,700 pounds of Tornados Ranchero Beef & Cheese roll-ups.
All the products that have been recalled contain hydrolyzed vegetable protein, a flavor enhancer from the house of Basic Food Flavors of North Las Vegas, Nev. On March 04, the company had announced a complete recall of its entire range of products dating to Feb 17, 2009.
No comments have yet been shared by the company on any of the developments.
This week, the FDA released an inspection report which suggested that Basic Food Flavors knew that the products and its plants were tainted with salmonella as early as January 21, but did not do anything about it and "continued to distribute HVP paste and powder products until 2/15/2010".
No illnesses related to the contamination, however, have been reported yet, as has been confirmed by the FDA.
