Moderate Drinking Helpful in Obesity Curbing, but only for Females
Moderate Drinking

Few days after Women’s Day, the New York Times cited a new research which comes as good news for females with an alcoholic bent. This study was recently published in Archives of Internal Medicine and highlighted the fact that regular but sensible drinking can be helpful for maintaining lesser body weight and curbing obesity to an extent, but only for females.

New York Times stated, "New research suggests that women who regularly consume moderate amounts of alcohol are less likely to gain weight than nondrinkers and are at lower risk for obesity".

The study compares the teetotalers to the alcohol consumers and it was found that the risk of getting overweight is lesser in the later by one third. The study also states the reasons for why only females enjoy this benefit of having wine but no fats. One reason is that alcohol is capable of pacing up the metabolism only in females and not in man. And the second stated reason is that on one hand where female body uses alcohol as food, the male body adds calories after consuming alcohol.

But, Dr. Lu Wang of Brigham and his fellow members alarm, "Taking into account the potential medical and psychosocial problems related to drinking alcohol. Any recommendation on alcohol use should be made for the individual after carefully evaluating both adverse and beneficial effects of the drinking behavior in broad context".
