Akamai Technologies has decided to cut its global workforce by 7 percent, or about 110 employees.
Cambridge, Mass.-based Akamai said it was taking the latest step to reduce certain operating costs at a time when the US and global economy have been turning down.
However, the company did not disclosed out the number of job cuts by location and declined to say how many job it would shed at its headquarters. The company employed more than 1,500 worldwide, at the end of September.
Earlier in June, Paul Sagan, chief executive had announced in an statement that Akamai had added nearly 100 jobs in Cambridge in 2008 and expected to add 100 to 200 more.
Akamai Technologies, Inc. provides services for accelerating the delivery of content and applications over the Internet. The company offers three business solutions: Digital Asset Solutions, Dynamic Site Solutions, and Application Performance Solutions.
The announcement came after the market closed Wednesday. Akamai's shares fell $1.27, or 11 percent, to close at $10.63.
