Pierina Kapur, who removed a baby's bladder carelessly, has been permitted to continue her practice, though; she will have to abide by strict rules for the coming 12 months.
The operation was carried out on a six-week-old girl from Manchester at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in October, 2008. The matter was taken to the General Medical Council for investigation.
The 18-months-old child will have to use a catheter for the rest of her life and will have to undergo one more surgery. A seven-day fitness to practice hearing revealed that the surgeon's actions were far more than mere negligence.
GMC decided yesterday that conditions will be imposed on Miss Kapur's work for the coming year. The panel said that though she has committed a serious blunder, yet the patients can't be deprived of her services.
The panel said to her, "This period reflects the severity of the matters found proved but will permit you to undertake a phased return to independent practice".
Heather Edwards, head of communications at the Royal Bolton Hospital, said, "Miss Kapur is employed by Central Manchester University Hospitals and comes to the Royal Bolton Hospital as part of their outreach service."
