Breast cancer awareness has been elevated and the storyline of the prime-time soap Coronation Street is being given the credit of the awareness drift. The show on Christmas had shown the character in the serial Weatherfield's Sally Webster (the role is played by Sally Whittaker) revealing the diagnosis of breast cancer to her husband and telling him that treatment was needed.
The storyline has reportedly doubled the referred recommendations for further treatment, informed Breast Cancer Care Unit Specialist at Grimsby's Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.
Contented with the increase in awareness, hospital's breast cancer Consultant Leslie Donaldson said that making breast cancer a storyline in prominent serials makes it obvious that due to interest put in by the fans, awareness increases. This rise in attentiveness, calls for new hospitals and clinics to be opened especially by Pink Rose Suite as it treats the breast cancer patients, in order to meet the demands for check-ups.
The inflow of the referrals resulted because of the popularity after being seen in Coronation Street’s plotline, breast care Manager Rachel Cubbinson stated that although more cases of the illness have not yet been detected but the curios and concerned patients have been attended and reassured.
Spokesperson of the Coronation Street said that the contribution of the storyline has helped in making females conscious and aware about the disease and that he was glad for the credit.
