Child Sex Abuse Victims Face Waits as Long as Five Months for Counseling

Some traumatized children as young as three years old who have been sexually abused are in some cases waiting up to five months for counseling in Victoria.

The main reason behind their wait is revealed the shortage of adequate funds for these specialized services.

The Children's Protection Society reveals that a lack of funding points that it does not have enough counselors to deal with the number of children under 12 who need assistance.

Children's Protection Society chief executive Bernadette Burchell posts that for children below the age of 12, the waiting list for sexual abuse counseling at the organization is on average 159 days.

Currently, fifteen children are revealed to be on the waiting list.

The most recent data released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reveal that in 2008-09, nearly 450 proven cases of child abuse in Victoria involved sexual abuse.
