Roxon Not in favour with Sex Selection Proposal

Health Minister Nicola Roxon reveals that the federal government isn't pushing for a ban on baby gender selection technology to be lifted, posting her personal uncomfortability with the proposal, granting a huge relief to couples in Australia who seek to have fertility treatment.

Sex selection is only permitted in Australia when there is a risk that parents will pass on genetic diseases.

The five-year moratorium is revealed to expire this year and the National Health and Medical Research Council are reported to be in reviewing process of its guidelines.

Ms Roxon told ABC radio on Saturday, "But I need to flag that the government has not set down this path because we wish to make any changes."

In addition, she reveals that previous consultations have discovered the majority of Australians are not in favour of the practice being widely available.

Professor Kovacs claims that some parents already travel to countries like the United States and Thailand to choose the sex of their children.
