Northern Territory Police wants random test for drugs like cannabis and ecstasy, along with alcohol, for drivers.
Police Commissioner John McRoberts is portraying a policy on how the testing would function. He will put it forward to Chief Minister Paul Henderson later this month.
John says that drug testing equipment has come a long way since a Victorian driver was wrongly accused in 2005.
He said, "The testing regime in every state across Australia is now far more robust than it was back in the days when it was first introduced".
Meanwhile, Mr. Henderson has said that he would consider allowing drug tests when he is convinced that they were foolproof.
However, Mr. McRoberts said that territory police were not allowed to randomly stop motorists and give them mouth swab drug tests.
The commissioner said that he intends his officers to have the authority to test drivers for alcohol and drugs at random testing stations.
"We have the capacity to drug test motorists but, at the moment, we can do it only after a crash, unexplained bad driving behavior or when an officer has a reasonable suspicion that the driver is under the influence of drugs", said Mr. McRoberts.
